Finding True Rest: A Reflection on Matthew 11:28-30

by Brandi Long

I spent some time in the car this morning traveling to showings. And I was thinking about rest.
One of my favorite scriptures in the Bible is Matthew 11:28-30 specifically the Message Version.
"Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion?"
Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life.
I’ll show you how to take a real rest.
Walk with me and work with me, watch how I do it.
Learn the unforced rhythms of grace.
I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you.
Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly."
If you take a look at that second line. It says "come to me. get away with me and you'll recover your life."
He doesn't say try harder. He says "come to me."
True rest isn’t found in time off, bubble baths, vacations, or rearranging your schedule.
It’s found in proximity to Jesus.
And then also look at the end of the fourth line. "watch how I do it."
Jesus is not only our Savior. He is our model.
Jesus worked.... but He was never rushed.
Jesus led.... but he withdrew to pray.
Jesus carried the world... but He rested in the Father.
There is soooooo much goodness in that part of scripture.
It's so freeing to know what the truest form of rest is.... and that is with Jesus.
A nap can help cure a headache but rest for your SOUL comes from close proximity to Jesus.
