I Lost a Listing Because I Was Honest — And I’m Okay With That

I lost a listing the other day… because I was honest. Yep, you read that right.
As a realtor, it’s my job to come into any listing appointment prepared. Usually, I know I’m up against a couple of other agents, so I reinforce my selling strategy with current data and my killer marketing plan.
The meeting went so well! Great people, great energy, and I walked out feeling confident.
But afterward, I got the question:
“Will you match the lower fee another agent offered?”
Here’s the thing: asking that? Totally fair.
I respect that.
And even though it meant I would probably lose the listing, I reinforced my value.
I am not a discount broker.I tell every seller I meet, there are cheaper options out there. There always will be. But cheaper fees come with cheaper service.
I invest a ton of money before a home ever hits the market, and I only make it back if the home sells.
I know the value I bring… but that value has a price.
And I want folks to hire me because they believe in my value.
And if that means I lose the listing, that’s okay.
Because I’m not the right fit for everybody.
For buyers and sellers, that doesn’t mean you don’t ask the question!
If an agent is going to charge a premium fee, make sure they are providing premium service.
Call me confident or defensive, but I always say, vet your agents.
Ask questions.
See what they’re bringing to the table before you sign anything.
"A great agent will cost you…but a bad one will cost you even more."
